Day 4 - Yakima to Kenniwick

Last full day in the great state of Washington. It has EVERYTHING ! And lots and lots of space.

Got a tour of Yakima last night - a lot more "haves" than "have-nots". The 1% theory really resonates there.

3 phases today.

First to Zillah with my Warmshowers host. Rolling countryside with views of Yakima River and Mt Adams in the background. Great ride - about 30 miles. Culminates at a Mexican bakery. Great slice of local life.

Second - disaster. About 30 miles to Prosser with a very strong headwind.
So hard; so frustrating in high desert. I need a ticket home.

Third - Prosser. Take an hour at the bakery in town. Great little village. At 2:45 I start the final 36 miles. Pushing thru and the legs are feeling strong. Good cadence thru the hills of Benton City - 2 miles uphill out of town - and feel strong as I arrive in Kenniwick.

Trivia:

See the picture of Union Gap with Mt Adams in the background. Union Gap - get it - as in Gary Puckett.

Hear gunshot bangs in the orchards. Did u know that the term Cherry Bomb initiated from the explosives they use to keep birds off the cherry crop?

Tri-Cities area looks to be really booming; developments everywhere. Evidently lots of retirees.

Feeling good. Some serious climbs coming in the next few days as I head to Blue Mountains in Oregon. Remember the Tortoise !!!

Get your Pendleton orders in tonight!!

  1. Fortunately, from the looks of it (yellow jersey), Dad is still in the lead after the fourth stage!

  2. The only Gary Puckett I know played ball for the Minnesota Twins. Guess you had to be born in the WWI era to get Dad's reference....
